The first of our visits took place in Goteborg, where we met the club Goteborgs Historiska faktskola one of the partners of the project FENCE4YOU with who we are carrying out during the year 2018.
The club is located in a facility that has different rooms, in which different sports are done. The fencing room has all the comforts to perform the activity and has a large diaphanous space divided into areas where the various activities are taught throughout the day in the club. It also has a small toilet for men and women and an area at the entrance used as a reception with sofas and chairs to meet up.
When arriving at the room, they showed us the different weapons and materials for protection that they use to impart their activity, they explained us the different materials with which they work to be able to reach all the people interested in knowing the historical fencing, since the swords with which they work are very heavy and not everybody can practice the activity with their weight. For that reason, they train when it is necessary with plastic swords designed for this purpose. In order to preserve the total safety of the activity, they use different protections on the head, forearms, hands and trunk to cushion the blows that may be received during the combat.
The club Gotebors Historika Fakstola is attached to the Association of historical fencing and martial arts of Sweden that belongs to the Swedish federation of martial arts and budo, is the most important club of historical fencing in Sweden with around 150 members and one of the most important in the world, along with the Swedish Association of Martial Arts organize the World Championship of Historical Fencing called Swordfish. The best athletes who practice this discipline participate in it.
The club has activities every day of the week and technicians impart them according to the level of athletes ranging from children who are starting to great athletes of different disciplines. Technicians are trained at the club to prepare for an exam that can accredit them to teach.
The historical fencing teaching practiced in the hall is based on fencing treatises published in the book the art of combat a German martial arts treatise of 1570. The teachers read the treatises and interpret the written techniques in order to put them into practice in the hall and teach them to all the students. According to their skill will be more or less effective. All the teaching has an applied pedagogy that has been designed by the instructors of the club and it is the one that is carried out for the transmission of knowledge to the students.
After sharing their forms of organization and structure as a club, we were able to observe the classes given by the coaches of the club to their students according to the level they had and how they trained the people with a higher level in the room.
We also had the opportunity to try the practice of historical fencing, equipping ourselves with all the protective gear and using the weapons with which they practice the various disciplines taught in the club, after some fights the feeling we have is the difficulty involved in practicing these disciplines and contrary to what may seem is very difficult to get to touch the rival and you need very good physical fitness and technical knowledge to keep up the pace that involves being able to perform a fight of these characteristics. Then, we leave you some images and videos that we made during our visit and that illustrate all the experiences in which we have involved you in this summary.
